Back to School Blessings

The weekend of August 7 & 8 will be a chance for First Lutheran to offer

Back to School Blessings for our students, teachers, and all who are
gearing up for a new school year. Children and students of all ages are
invited to bring their backpacks to worship for a blessing and receive a tag for their backpack! There will also be a blessing for teachers and those who work in the schools. This time of blessing will be a part of all weekend worship opportunities, including online worship.

Celebrating Mary, Mother of Our Lord

The summer months are host to the long “green” season of the church year:  Sunday after Sunday in Ordinary Time. We count the weeks after Pentecost, a couple dozen of them, until our Reformation celebration comes at
the end of October. A welcome break in the green season comes when a saint’s feast day falls on a Sunday.

When that happens, we have the option of celebrating that saint’s life in worship.

The feast day for Mary, Mother of our Lord, is August 15, which is a Sunday this year. We will observe this during our weekend worship services on August 14 & 15. This means we get to hear Mary’s story and sing Mary’s song in the middle of summer – activities that are usually reserved for Advent and Christmas. Think of it as Christmas in August.

Our observation of this day and celebration of Mary’s life and faith will not be limited to her role in the Christmas story, however, She is, indeed, the “Mother of God.” She stood near the cross as her son breathed

his last. She gathered with her fellow disciples in the days after Jesus’ Ascension as they waited for the gift of

the promised Holy Spirit. Her “yes” to God that we first hear about in the beginning of Luke’s Gospel continues throughout her life, and is echoed every time one of the faithful says “yes” in response to God’s call.
